Giving to Others and Myself, at the Same Time.

Dominican Joe's is one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin, and with the abundance of coffee shops in the city, that should mean quite a lot. I love the global perspective and the fact that they have eliminated the evil 'middle-man' from the business and deal directly with the farmers in the Dominican Republic. I feel good about supporting this business, and my caffeine addiction, when I visit this shop. I have discovered that it is also a prime location for homework and studying. The shop is expansive with plenty of large, wooden tables to accommodate all of my books and a plethora of outlets to plug in my laptop. The subtle earth tones, wooden floors and deep, sweet aroma make it instantly peaceful and relaxing. I could come to this place simply to sit and inhale deeply for awhile...that is how good it smells. The music is a mix of indie-rock tunes that is played at the perfect non-distracting level and since everyone else in the shop is mostly at work too, they are not a distraction either. On weekend nights, the place comes alive with a different vibe, as a corner is normally devoted to local musicians. The people I have watched perform have been worth the visit and I would recommend checking out a show or two if you can. The coffee itself is strong and bold (just the way I like it) and placed in a Eco-friendly mug upon request. My favorite thing to splurge on, however, is either the white chocolate macadamia nut latte or the gingerbread latte (during the holidays.) I am always satisfied, especially as I type away occasionally glancing up at the pictures that line the walls of the adorable Dominican children I am helping.
