Makes You Think All the World's a Sunny Day, Oh Yeah.
I always dread the moment at concerts when the singer steps up to the mic to announce they will now play a cover. I cannot help but roll my eyes on these occasions. I came here to see you play your music - if I wanted to hear that song, I would be at that concert. But on Sunday night, I had an unanticipated and unnatural reaction to Conor Oberst's cover of Paul Simon's "Kodachrome." Once he began playing and the familiar notes seeped into the air, as uncontrollable smile crept across my face. I was nine years old again, my peachy blond hair trailed behind me in a long, tangled and sweaty mess. I was giggling profusely. My younger brother, Danny, was emitted more of a cackle from his petite, wiry little frame. He was chasing me around around the island of our kitchen, our socks causing us to slip and slide and trip and stumble on the tile. "Kodrachrome" was blasting from the stereo in adjacent living room. Our favorite part was always when Simon cranked up the tempo, spitting out "Mama don't take my kodachrome away..." at an almost inaudible speed, because we, for some reason, felt the need to pick up our speed too...now sprinting even more gracelessly after one another in dizzying circles. It always ended with him and I tangled in a pile on the living room carpet, gasping for a air between fits of laughter. So okay, I liked this cover. Just this once.
