If You Have Seen One Redwood, You've Seen Them All.

I am so sick of Tex-Mex. And therefore I am taking a hiatus from the Tex-Mex with the opinion that if you've eaten at one of these joints, you've eaten at them all. Authentic Mexican will be the only restaurants I will venture into for this period, however long it may last. My decision comes after dining at Vida Loca, a Mexican Bar and Grill, in Katy. We arrived at 6pm to wait for an ungodly hour and a half for a table. Once situated, I glanced at a menu I have seen 1,000 times before. 'Sizzling' beef and chicken fajitas. Tacos in flour tortillas. Enchiladas smothered in sauces. Quesadillas. Guacamole. Queso. Zzzzzzzzzzzz. Not only are the menus redundant and unimaginative at these restaurants, but the food quality has become the same unappealing combination of mush on a plate. A basket of tortilla chips with humdrum, flavorless tomatillo salsa. Flat, muddy refried beans. Bland, unnaturally bright yellow rice. Some unidentifiable substance oozing and dripping with a thick cheesy-looking cream sauce which I only know is an enchilada because I ordered it. Four petite pieces of triangular tortillas, slimy with grease and stuffed with an unappetizing amount of gooey cheese. Don't forget the melting guacamole and sour cream slapped haphazardly on the side of the plate. In rebellion, I am refusing to wait for hours with the rest of the human race for such a repetitive, uninspired, inauthentic meal which I have already done too many times. It will be hard, since Texas is a mecca for these restaurants, but I will resist.
